Store Closing Details! Inventory Liquidation!

MISHAWAKA FURNITURE TO HOLD MASSIVE LIQUIDATION

The Mishawaka Furniture building, 402 Lincoln Way West, has been purchased by the City of Mishawaka, and the furniture company must vacate the premises by February of 2010. A store- closing sale will be conducted by Mishawaka Furniture to liquidate their total inventory and empty their historic building. Originally built in 1910 as the second building to house Mishawaka High School, the 75,000 square foot structure will be converted into 32 affordable rental apartments for senior citizens. “This building has been a fixture in our downtown for 100 years, and we are excited to now have the opportunity to make some needed investment in the property,” commented Mayor Jeff Rea in a news release issued by the city in May of this year. Completion of the total renovation is projected to be in early 2011.

As part of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds granted the City of Mishawaka by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Association, a total of 52 residences will be created for low to moderate income households. The core of the project will be the Mishawaka Furniture building along with the demolition of 20 vacant buildings in the area surrounding the furniture store on both sides of the St. Joseph River. That area is surrounded by Grove Street on the north, Sixth Street on the south, Cedar Street on the east and Taylor Street on the west.

Before it served as home to Mishawaka Furniture, the building housed the Main Junior High School when the current high school building was opened in 1924. In 1972, the building was sold to Alex and Martha Rzepka and occupied in 1973 by Mishawaka Furniture. Mayor Rea commented, “This is perhaps the largest historic preservation project we’ve ever undertaken as a community. We recognize the important part this building has played in our history and we now are excited about the important part it will play in our future. This building is a very prominent part of the downtown and is visible from virtually every part of our central business district. The building has not seen significant investment in many years, and has been absent of basic things like windows for 20-plus years. The renovation will help us restore the building to its original look.”

The massive store-closing sale will begin on October 8, 2009 when Mishawaka Furniture will offer every piece of fine furniture at unprecedented discounts. Prices will be slashed on all sofas, chairs, ottomans, recliners, bedroom and dining rooms, mattress sets, curios, lamps, pictures and accessories. Everything must be sold to the bare walls so that the building can be turned over to its new owners.

The sale will be open to the public on Thursday, October 8, 2009. Store hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday, 10 am to 8 pm; Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, 12 noon to 5 pm.
